Fish Aquarium Tanks
How i stop the algae blooms in my fish tank/aquarium?
I have a 75 gallon tank, good filters, airation, lighting, ect. My 2 plecos keep the tank spotless when it comes to algae growith on the glass, gravel and plants….but the water gets cloudy and green constantly. I do good 50% water changes with vacuum every few days, add algae killer and clean the filter and the blooms just come right back!
Fish are otherwise healthy….it’s just ugly.
Causes for algae blooms:
1. Too much light. You only want 8-12 hours of light on the tank.
2. Overstocking. What other fish do you have in the tank?
3. Overfeeding. How much are you feeding?
4. Excess phosphates in your water source. Do you live near a farm?
5. Not enough tank maintenance.
I seriously would quit with the algaecide. You should stop with the cleaning of the filter so much as well. You are killing alot of beneficial bacteria. Do you test your water? What is your ammonia, ph, nitrite, nitrate, gh and kh levels?
Next time the water turns green, try covering the tank with a blanket for 4 days. Dont feed the fish, dont peek, just make sure your filter stays running. No light whatsoever will kill the algae spores. Or you could invest in a UV sterilizer.
